The main idea behind the Start Centre is continuous compilation and monitoring of statistics on injuries and the use of these data in injury prevention. Here, as in the WHO definition, the word 'injury' refers not only to normal injuries but also to assaults, self-sustained injuries and suicide attempts.
The main purpose of the Start Centre is to ensure the continuity and conditions for injury statistics compilation and the use of injury data in systematic injury and violence prevention.
The Start Centre is located in Kouvola, southeastern Finland. The goal is to create a model of injury monitoring that may be introduced anywhere.

Start-keskuksen toiminta sisältää tapaturmatietojen tilastointia ja seurantaa.Olennainen osa Start-keskuksen toimintaa on tieteellinen tutkimus- ja julkaisutyö. Tapaturmatietoa, tapaturma-aineistoja ja tutkimustuloksia käytetään hyväksi suunnitelmalliseen tapaturmien ehkäisyyn.
Start-keskus toimii tällä hetkellä Kouvolan alueella (väestöpohja noin 90 000). Kouvolan kaupungin toimialueet ovat päivähoito, koulut, vanhusten koti-, avo- ja laitoshoito. Tavoitteena on tapaturmaseurannan mallintaminen siten, että se voidaan ottaa käyttöön missä tahansa.
